Jumbled Words and Punctuation

 Jumbled words

  • In jumbled words, there are words arranged in an incorrect way making no meaning.
  • These words when arranged in a correct way give a meaning to the sentence.
  • Apart from jumbled words, there are jumbled sentences also.

  1. Friends / best / good / a / one of / book / is / our
  • A book is one of our best friends
  1. Companions / highly patient and / it / cheerful of / is the
  • It is the highly cheerful and patient of companions.

  1. Good manners / love / of others / win the / and / respect.
  2. Best / when / one is / they can / young / be learnt
  3. They / in life / are a / sure / for success / passport

Punctuations

  • To improve clarity conventional characters are used which are called as punctuation.
  • Example – Semicolons, commas, etc.
  • Punctuations tell where to pause, which words or phrases are grouped together, etc.

The main characters of punctuation are

  • Colons (:)
  • Apostrophes (‘)
  • Ellipses (…)
  • Commas (,)
  • Hyphen (-)
  • Full stops (.)
  • Quotation marks (“")
  • Question marks (?)
  • Semicolons (;)
 

 

Some Punctuation 

  1.  Apostrophes
  • Used to show the time expression

(Example – a day’s leave)

  • Used in contractions

(Example – don’t, can’t)

  1.  Colons
  • Follows an introduction

(Example – I’ve witnessed the following: slime, rust and a rat)

  • With quotations

(Example – he said: honesty is the best policy)

  1.  Commas
  • As parentheses

(Example- Ram and Rome, who live nearby, are my good friends)

  • To separate the items

(Example – honey, butter, jam)

  • In numbers

(Example – 6, 45,265)

  1. Hyphen
  • For joining words

(Example – two-sided coin)

  • In compound noun to join words

(Example – cooking – oil, paper – clip)

  1. Full stop
  • End of a sentence

(Example – I like apples.)

  • In abbreviations

(Example – B.Com, B.B.C)

  1. Semicolons
  • Used before the conjunction

(Example – today, it was, to our expectation, windy; but tomorrow, to our surprise, it will be clear.)
