Sentences and Sentence Sequencing

 Sentence

  • It is a grammatical unit
  • A sentence expresses a full thought and has group of words.
  • There is a subject and a predicate in a sentence
  • Example – James wrote an excellent poem. Here James is the subject and wrote an excellent poem is the predicate.

Simple and complex sentences

  1. Simple sentences

  • There is only one clause in simple sentences.
  • Example – The boy is learning how to swim.
  1. Complex sentences

  • More than one clause is there in complex sentences.
  • Example – The boy who is learning how to swim is just 8 years old.

Types of Sentences

  1. Declarative sentence

  • A statement is made
  • Example – Students will be heard in a couple of minutes.
  1. Imperative statement

  • A request is made or a command is given
  • Example – Please give me your pen to write.
  1. Interrogative sentence

  • A question is asked
  • Example – Do you to like this blue shirt?
  1. Exclamatory sentence

  • Strong feeling is shown
  • Example – What a beautiful purse she is carrying! 

Sentence Sequencing

  • Various sentences are given in incorrect order which makes no meaning.
  • In sentence sequencing, the correct order or sequence is given to the sentences.

Example

  1. Young people in villages and cities is very wrong and bad
  2. Of the cinema
  3. The effect
  4. On the college and school going

Correct sentence – The effect of the cinema on the college and school going young people in villages and cities is very wrong and bad. (2341)
