The words 'a', 'an' and 'the' are known as articles. These articles are being used along with nouns. There are certain rules according to which a particular article to be used is decided. Let us have a look at these basic rules.
This article is most commonly used with common nouns which are not specific.That is when they do not refer to a particular noun. It is always used with singular nouns. And it is used with words starting with a consonant. Examples of usage of 'a' are:

It is mainly used with nouns starting with a vowel or the sound of a vowel. The vowels are: 'a' , 'e', 'i' , 'o', 'u'. Examples are:
