Voices and Narration

 Voices

  • The term which is used to tell whether the verb is active or passive is known as voice.
  • The verb is in passive voice in a passive sentence
  • The verb is in active voice in an active sentence.

Active voice

  • If the action is performed by the subject then the verb is known to be in the active voice.
  • Example- The cat ate our food

(Cat is the subject and ate is the active verb. Subject did the verb)

Passive voice

  • If the action is done to the subject than the verb is known to be in the passive voice.
  • Example – Our food was eaten by the cat

(Our food is the subject and was eaten is the passive verb.)

Narration

  • It is an art which reports or records the words of the speaker.
  • There are two forms of narration-
  1. Direct speech
  2. Indirect speech

  1. Direct Speech
  • The words by the speaker are placed in quotes.
  • Example- Sheena said, “She is not busy."

(Sheena is the reporter and said is the reporting verb, is not busy is the reported speech)

  1. Indirect speech
  • A simpler version is made from the words of the speaker in this speech.
  • Example – Sheena said that she was not busy then.

Rules to convert speech from direct to indirect

  1.  Reported speech and reported verb should be in sync.
  2.  Inverted commas should be replaced with the appropriate conjunction.
  3.  The pronoun of the reported speech should be changed carefully
  4.  The adverbs of the direct speech should be changed.
